Before I Go to Sleep (2014)

A woman with a memory retention time of one day pieces her life back together by recording short reminders but the truth may be harder to find that it seems.

There’s almost a sub-genre of memory loss films and it’s often easy to align with the protagonist since it automatically puts them in a position of innocence even if they turn out to be bad. The mystery unravells in steps which are intriguing enough and suspicion is cast around in fairly equal measure with small regular twists.

Due to the need to keep everyone’s intentions secret until the end, it means we’re limited in who we can invest in and most of the information we receive is unvarified so any clues can just as easily be false leads. The house most of it takes place in is unsettling from the beginning, more resembling the isolated forest homes from some slasher or home invasion movies.

The acting was all of good quality with affectations that can be equally creepy or explicable due to the heavy subject matter. There was a good deal of subtext about abuse in cases of mental illness as well as outside perceptions of those afflicted. The ending may have been predictable to some due to the low number of possibilities but still satisfying in its way.

At several points the plot works out a little too conveniently, partly during the investigation by having the right flashbacks at the right moments or friends reappearing just as they’re needed for the sequence of events, but the biggest one is at the end where a psychological condition is partly cleared up so that closure is achievable.
